Speaking

The Speaking module is divided into three parts relating to the BULATS Speaking test:

  • Part 1 – four units and a model video covering Part 1 of the test
  • Part 2 – three units and a model video covering Part 2 of the test
  • Part 3 – three units and a model video covering Part 3 of the test.
Speaking structure

Responding to questions: Questions related to the topic of the unit. Planning: You practise making notes for a topic card, which requires rephrasing the key words of the question and noting down ideas to cover all the points listed on the card. You receive model notes relating to the same topic card, which you can use to prepare for the practice tests ahead. Questioning: You practise asking questions in order
to obtain the information indicated on the Information exchange section of
the card.
Expanding answers:
You practise extending the answers given in the Responding to questions section, by using words and phrases to give an organised answer. These exercises will help you to improve your speaking skills for the Your turn section.
Processing: You complete exercises that introduce you to the skills you need to complete the Model practice section. These exercises will help to prepare you for the Your turn section. Focusing: You complete exercises that introduce you to the language you need to successfully complete the Explaining and discussing sections.
Feedback: You apply your knowledge of answering interview questions to evaluate the test performance of an
example candidate.
Presenting: You complete exercises to practise interpreting body language (video). Explaining: You practise
the functional language needed to complete the Information exchange section of the BULATS Speaking test role play.
Your turn: You answer BULATS questions that practise the skills covered in the unit. These will give you effective practice for Part 1 of the BULATS Speaking test. Model practice: You plan and deliver a 1-minute talk. You listen to a model presentation and compare this to your answer. Discussing: You reflect on the topic, and discuss related ideas and information using the hints provided. This section helps to improve your speaking skills for the Your turn section.
  Your turn: You answer BULATS questions that practise the skills from the unit. These will give you effective practice for Part 2 of the BULATS Speaking test. Model practice: You practise forming appropriate questions and responding to the examiner's questions using your own personal experience and information. You record your own answer and listen to a model answer.
    Your Turn 1, 2 and 3: You answer BULATS questions to practise the skills from the unit. These give you effective practice for Part 3 of the BULATS Speaking test.
